If you are new to the lab or starting a new study, we recommend scheduling a consultation in advance to review your submission plan. Our team can provide guidance and recommendations to help optimize your sample submission and ensure the best possible results.

Request Custom Panel
If you have a specific study that requires a variety of analytes that are not in a standard panel, we can create a custom panel for you. Please consult Lab Manager Jing Hu at jingh@stanford.edu for details in setting up your custom panel.
Sample & Specimen Collection
- For Sample collection assistance, please contact Ben Franco, RVT, RLATG Veterinary Technician Supervisor (for survival bleeds) or Elias Godoy, Necropsy Technician (for terminal bleeds). Please submit a “Blood and Biosample Collection/General Veterinary Technician Assistance” request here.
- Please coordinate with us prior to having Ben or Elias collect your sample/specimen to check for restrictions on your planned submission date or time.
- For sample type, quantity, collection tube/media, Specimen handling/storage, please refer to our Welcome Packet or do not hesitate to contact us directly for details.
Volume Requirements
- Please view “Volume Quick Look Handout” under Resources for most commonly used analytes here.
- For chemistries, please make sure you add 50uL serum/plasma for cup dead volume to the required minimum volume. Please also account for pipetting volume loss, tube wall volume loss, sample cup volume loss and other losses. Volumes listed are bare minimum volumes, and does not account for re-analysis, verifications etc. We encourage more volume to be submitted than what is required as the minimum volume.
- If there are any leftover samples, you can request for the samples to be returned to you. Please indicate on the submission form along with preferred storage method.
- If you are short sample:
- With your permission, we will attempt to dilute your sample to provide you results. Please make sure you check the box if it is ok to dilute or not.
- Dilutions are dependent on if that analyte has been validated for dilution or not. Some analytes cannot be diluted, so please plan accordingly.
- If dilution is not acceptable for your study, we will report it as “short sample” and no results will be reported.
Analyte Priority List
- For small animals or small volume samples, please provide an analyte priority list since there is a possibility the requested full panel cannot be analyzed.
- Please indicate on the submission sheet the order of your analyte priority and confirm with our team that this is communicated.
- Some analytes can or cannot be diluted. Please consult our team for more information regarding dilutions to avoid missing out on your requested analytes.
- Review the “Volume Requirement” document under Resources prior to your sample/specimen collection.
- Use our “Minimum Volume Calculator” under Resources for common chemistry analyte calculation. This excel can be used to see if there is enough sample volume and a column to rank your analytes.
